BOSTON, MA. August 17, 2010. The Above and Beyond Award is one of highest honors that an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Field Office can bestow on an employer. It is recommended and given in limited numbers by The State Field Chair. It recognizes employers at the state and local level who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements for granting leave and providing support for military duty by their employees. One such employer in Massachusetts is the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

Knoxville's Brittany Rolfe knew what she was in for when she decided to marry a solider in 2006.  The Oak Ridge native was well-aware that her marriage to Staff Sgt. David Rolfe of the 844th Engineer Battalion would likely translate into long periods of time apart, missed special occasions and constant worry of the unknown.

 The Idaho National Guard played host to 179 employers, civic leaders, representatives from Idaho government agencies and members of the legislature at its annual 'Boss Lift' today August 26, 2010.  The 'Boss Lift' is conducted every year by the Idaho Chapter of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.  The state chapter is part of a nationwide organization of business and civic leaders to provide support for members of the guard and reserve, and to assist their civilian employers to understand the importance of part-time military service, and provides help to businesses that have employees called away from their civilian jobs to active military duty.

Last Wednesday morning, I found myself climbing into a National Guard helicopter at Morristown Airport about to leave for Camp Smith in northern Westchester County and a day with the National Guard. Being strapped into my seat, the state's adjutant general mentioned that the doors don't close. Have I mentioned I'm not a fan of heights?
